Category: the Rant Board
Well well well here I am again on the rant board to rant about .. spam!
OK here's the deal. .. i was on the web site of my ISP ) a while ago and noticed that they had junk filters. so, as everyone else is as tired of getting spam as I was, I felt inclined to use it. so turned it on. Well .. it proved to be wonderful. I would get email once a week from the junk filter telling me that it had stopped on average per week 300 junk messages from getting to me. so I felt great. no more spam but I did feel my message traffic was a little lighter than it should be but I just thought maybe people were starting to get bored of the net and just put it down to co-incidence Lol! but then I tried to subscribe to a list on topica and I was not getting any response. so I went to my filter thing and found that as well as keeping all the junk messages, there were other list messages that I hadn't been getting.
So I then discovered that we can configure it according to email addresses and certain domains we want to go through. But .. for the life of me I couldn't work out how to do it, so, as I really wanted to join this topica list (a braille music one :) I just turned it off and was amazed. Literally a minute after I turned it off, i was already getting junk. I'd say now about 90% of my emails are junk. I honestly believe it's worse than even a month ago when I'd turned the filter on. It is just sooo unbelievable! I do remember back to the good old days when we'd literally get no spam in fact, didn't even know what the word meant, Lol!
A while ago I use to do such crazy things and respond to the stupid Nigerian scams just making fun of them but .. as wel as copping some whacky entertainment, I think that it opened my address up to more of them. Lol! but now I actually don't get so much of them - just porn stuff and advertizing like, half price laptops and XP home versions and all that crazy stuff.
Does anyone know a trick for stopping email spam if any at all? (apart from the filters)? I mean is a lot of it to do with being on yahoogroups? However, I am thinking I might call my ISP and get them to perhaps show me or help me set up my filters properly.
Rant over.
Cheers! :)
Yeah I get like most of people anoied with spam too. I personally don't believe in any spam filters, I've tried a few of them and as much as some of them were meant to be flexible and controlible I still was loosing legitimet mail like emails from mailing lists/news letters even emails from people I knew, so because of that I decided to give up with spam filters. I'd rather spend a few mins a day quickly deleting some spam than loos mail, but that's my personal preference, plus I don't seem to get that much spam as I used to. I doubt that the reason for spam is anything to do with being on Yahoo groups, spambots imply look up domain names and then send mass mail to any emails on that domain..I even saw ironicly a spam email offering me to buy such software where I could do all kind of things like domain lookups meaning it'd send mass mail to any email on a particular domain, scan IP ranges to send messages through messenger service ETC...but anyway, as I said, I really think there's not a good spam filter out there, there's no way that it can guaranty that you won't loos mail you might want and need so I won't bother with them.
true .. one could never be sure anyway so I think I'll stick to what you're doing and try to put up with it. .. but that's interesting about the mass email on domains; I never really knew much about that. thanks for letting me know.
spam is a growing problem, although there was some talk about it deminishing a little over the last few months. I do what internet king does, I've tried spam filters etc, but they're a pile of shite and I much prefer a good scan for biruses on incoming mail, and to delete all the spam when it's in my inbox.
Hey. Well, one way to avoid spam is to use one e-mail address for those you trust, and another for other stuff such as companies that you buy stuff from off the internet. My address, number, and e-mail address is everywhere on the net, so I'm king for spam John why don't ya? Its annoying, but I hage found the unsubscribe addresses helpfull, and they stopped a a lot of them.
John
hi there. Well, considering the topic was good, I just have two e-mail addresses. I have one in hotmail, which has also, and will always have, a junk e-mail filter. I turn it on but just for e-mails that are not in my contact list. A smart thing the mailing listers could do is send the e-mail, hmm, for example if the address of the list is computer-discusion@yahoo.com, send all the e-mail and have them received with that address, not the member's addresses, so you don't loose any e-mail. I have some of my mailing lists in digest mode, and it seems to work pretty good for me.
I also do the same thing; i just delete unecesary e-mails and check my "important" ones.
I hate spam as much as anyone else. It's so annoying! One time, I signed up with e music, for there 14 day free trial, and I got a whole lot of spam in those emails. I use a spam filter which does the job.
I have a few email addresses including a hotmail, google and yahoo. Only at hotmail i got some spam especially emails saying that they are upgrading paypal and if i didn't want to loose my account i had to update my details, others who said that i wan some money and other rubbish. So far i didn't get anything at my google and yahoo emails. And i never got spam at my email address that i have with my ISP in Cyprus but i guess spammers would aim countries such as USA because they are bigger and people speak English.
Thankfully, I don't get spam in my hotmail account.
I get this stuff in my hotmail account saying mail cannot be delivered and it's making it's way to my inbox.
I've got those messages before. There are some ways to tell if an email is lagitamit, or a phishing email.
the incoming email address, the address from which the mail was sent, is unusual, or if the website you go to looks real, and has some unusual extra characters. For example, if an email links to a site called www.bank of america12345.com, it's definitely a phishing email. Never, ever reply to spam in any case. I hope these tips help.
I've got some failure notice emails saying the message couldn't be sent.
The truth is, spam filters will block just about all messages until otherwise adjusted.
Don't trust them.
Well, that's right in some cases. If you adjust the filter correctly, and if it's a good filter, you'll be fine. The spam filter in hotmail works wonders. I've never got spam.
spam is that stuff in a can. Right?
Me to. I have my junk filters on right now but certain emails such as emails from my bank go to my junk mail instead of my inbox.
Oh,. Sounds fun.
Oopes. That was supposed to be a quick note.
I guess I will reply
Anyways, I often check my junk mail folder in case there's something important there.
as far as spam is concerned, i hate it with a passion. i get messages like, vi agra or, 169e4304, u know, with random subjects. i get emails like, a bigger pen is for u. they get into my gmail account, but never in my inbox. gmail is configured to send those straight to the spam folder. i have a milion email accounts as well.
yup...no avoiding spam.
true. spam sucks. but if u go to a website called 419eater.com, you will see some funny spam baits that people do to get the spammers back. i find myself reading about the awesome spam baits on that site. check it out. you will get a laugh.
that's cool...lol
